Multiple varities in the clinical manifestations of atopy in asthmatics

Summary
The authors constructed a five-class model of atopy. Children were classified into the following categories:

  1. Multiple positive skin tests appearing early in age.
  2. Multiple positive skin tests appearing later in age.
  3. Dust mite only positive skin test.
  4. Non-dust mite skin test.
  5. Children with no latent vulnerability.

They found that multiple early class (children with multiple positive skin tests early) demonstrated worsened airway function and increased airway reactivity.

They concluded that antibody responses (IgE responses) do not reflect "a single phenotype of atopy, but several different atopic vulnerabilities which differ in their relation with asthma presence and severity."
