Associates to the AAAAI:
2007 Winter Newsletter

Frances Washburne

President's Pen - Frances Washburne

Welcome to San Diego!

Excitement and enthusiasm are growing as we finalize our plans for the meeting for the Associates of the AAAAI! Be sure to mark your calendars for all of the activities, tours, shopping, dining, or simply to enjoy the sunrises and sunsets as you stroll along the beaches of San Diego. A sampling of some of the tours that will be offered this year are a Mini Trek to Coronado, a VIP San Diego Zoo Adventure, and a tour of the Orfila Vineyards and Winery. These offerings are sure to peak your interest in the many sightseeing treasures offered to visitors in this popular southern California vacation destination.

The "Not-So-Silent Auction" is once again a highlight of our Associates’ activities. It is our premier, on-going annual event in which we raise funds for our Award of Excellence Asthma Scholarships and Awards of Merit, benefiting many deserving high school seniors throughout the United States and Canada. This year our auction is going to make some slight changes with closing bids ending on a new day, with a new time and location, and we need your support! Please plan to commit to this worthwhile cause by donating and soliciting quality items, such as artwork, jewelry, handcrafted items, tickets to major events, gift certificates, trips, or use of vacation homes. Auction items will be available for viewing beginning Thursday and Friday, February 22 and 23 at the San Diego Convention Center, and the Auction will close with the final bidding available during the ART Reception on Saturday evening, Feb. 24. (Even if you don’t plan to attend the reception, you will still have access to the auction items to make a final bid to win your desired auction item.) We need everyone’s help to make this successful. To make a donation to the auction, please call our Vice President, Fundraising, Margaret Quel at (310) 823-6766 or email marinaquel@hotmail.com. Another way you may contribute is to give a monetary donation directly to the Scholarship fund by contacting John Augustyniak at the AAAAI executive office at (414) 272-6071.

Our annual Breakfast and Business Meeting has been moved to Saturday (February 24, 2007) this year, 9:00-11:00 a.m., in order to allow members more freedom to sightsee and enjoy their weekend time. Please mark your calendars with this change. We hope that you will plan to attend and enjoy a light breakfast buffet while visiting with old and new friends and participate in a very short business meeting. Phyllis Rubin, Program Chairman, and her committee are working to make this year’s theme a "shining" one: the 25th Silver Anniversary Celebration of the Associates, in which we will honor our Past Presidents in attendance, and celebrate our accomplishments over the years. Our entertainment is surely not to miss! It will be one to delight, organized by Elaine Richeimer, President-Elect, and will feature "stars" who are certain to allow us a walk down memory lane!

The Hospitality Suite will be located in the Coronado Room of the South Tower of the San Diego Marriott Hotel and Marina. It is a great meeting place to plan your day’s activities. Trudy Green and her Hospitality Committee will be setting up mementos from past meetings and providing you with information about our organization. The suite is open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Friday, February 23, through Tuesday, February 27.

One of the most popular AAAAI meeting destinations is now only weeks away! I look forward to seeing all of you in San Diego.

25th Anniversary Celebration
Associates of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology
1982-2007

At their annual meeting in San Diego the Associates of the AAAAI will be celebrating their twenty-fifth anniversary as an organization. The group began in 1981 as an assembly of friends and spouses of the AAAAI. Their mission was to forward and enhance the specialty of allergy through the United States by supporting and building on their accomplishments.

Phyllis Rubin, past president of the AAAAI and current Program V.P., is the chairperson of the twenty-fifth celebration, which will be held on Saturday morning, February 24, 2007 during the annual Associates breakfast. A fun morning is planned with entertainment from Hollywood personalities; along with other well known celebrities. Pictures with celebrities will be available.

We would like a group picture of all the past presidents of the Associates. So please try and attend the breakfast if you are one of the 25 past presidents.

The Twenty Fifth Anniversary committee would like every person attending the breakfast to wear an article of clothing in silver. We are including silver ribbons in the registration packets for Associate attendees and would like everyone wearing a name badge to be sure to attach the silver ribbon to be worn through out the meeting.

The officers of the Associates ask all spouses who are attending the meeting to come to the breakfast and help us celebrate our fun silver anniversary event.

Not-So-Silent Auction

In support of our Asthma Scholarship Fund

"We …feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean.
But if that drop was not in the ocean
the ocean would be less because of that missing drop."
- Mother Teresa

There is an ocean full of good that comes from the many Scholarships supported by our annual Not So Silent Auction. The quotes from essays and poems submitted by thousands of past scholarship applicants are a testament to these special people:

"If it is to be, it is up to me."
"Asthma isn’t who I am nor what I'll become"
"Asthma doesn’t limit people…people limit themselves"

AND the touching poems

"I haven't the air to sustain; The every-pulsing doubts remain; But they’d be banished from my brain, If only you will breathe for me"

These brief samples are both inspiring and challenging. How can you read these words and not help? We can’t breathe for these amazing teenagers but we certainly can breathe a bit of life into their college dream. These kids are are our future teachers, doctors, musicians, etc. They deserve special recognition for excelling in school in spite of asthma. One recognition we can give is a scholarship from funds raised by the Not So Silent Auction.

Here is what you can do: provide an auction item; secure a donation from a shop, gallery, boutique, etc.; purchase an auction item; encourage others to purchase an item for a wedding, anniversary, birthday, father’s day, mother’s day, graduation, etc.

Don’t be a missing drop in this auction "ocean". Call, write, fax, email me for information, suggestions, a sample donor letter, or whatever you need to become a part of this wonderful project. LET US MAKE THIS THE BEST AUCTION AND SCHOLARSHIP AWARD YEAR EVER.
