Associates to the AAAAI:
2006 Spring Newsletter

Frances Washburne

President’s Pen - Frances Washburne
Miami Beach was a wonderful setting for our 2006 Annual Meeting. I hope that you had a great visit to this exciting and interesting city. The Associates’ “Not-So-Silent Auction” for the Award of Excellence Asthma Scholarships provided an additional $4,000 for our Scholarship Program. A special thanks to Francene Lifson, our past Vice President-Fundraising, and all the Board members, past presidents, and everyone who contributed items and worked to set up and assist on Sunday morning with the Auction, as well as all of you who attended and bid on a variety of items. It has been a worthy and successful on-going project of the Associates for which we are able to provide scholarship monies for our growing pool of qualified applicants. We also have great appreciation to the Academy Board of Directors for their major funding and support of our scholarship program. Without their help, we would not be able to accomplish our goal of awarding scholarships to so many deserving students.

This year we were delighted to honor our Scholarship Chair Virginia Fawcett with the Associates’ Distinguished Service Award. Through her leadership skills, we’ve been able to all share in the success and accomplishments of the scholarship program. Thank you, Virginia, and congratulations on a much deserved honor!

Also, our own Trudy Green, Chairman of Hospitality, continues to provide a welcoming atmosphere year after year for guests at the annual meeting. Her warm and gracious manner makes everyone feel as if they have found the “perfect spot” for relaxing over a cup of coffee while visiting with friends in the Hospitality Suite, which is provided by the AAAAI at the annual meeting.

Those who attended the Sunday Breakfast and Business Meeting were entertained by a jazz trio from the Phillip and Patricia Frost School of Music at the University of Miami. Our Immediate Past President Helen Ownby, did an outstanding job of finding such talented young musicians to entertain us. She filled the bill for the Southern FL location with her “Beach Party, Fun in the Sun” theme which featured prizes for the best-dressed in beachwear, and the children who were present delighted in having their faces painted and taking home souvenirs of balloons and sand toys. At the close of the meeting, 05-06 Officers of the Associates Board were each given a beautiful bouquet of roses – compliments of Helen.

Look for new information in future newsletters to keep you abreast of activities to look forward to at the 2007 Annual Meeting in San Diego, CA. In anticipation of next year, our Vice President of Annual Program, Phyllis Rubin, and her committee are busily planning our breakfast meeting for 2007. A change in the date for the breakfast from our traditional Sunday morning to Saturday is being considered by the Board, so be looking for current updates about this. Margaret Quel, Vice President for Fundraising, will soon be all “abuzz” with ideas for our scholarship awards fundraising project, so keep your ear to the ground for news on this front!

The Associates are always looking for spouses and friends of the AAAAI to join our organization. When you are registered as a guest for the AAAAI Annual Meeting, you become a member of the Associates! This registration not only allows you to go to the exhibits, but it also serves as your pass to use the Hospitality Suite and definitely take advantage of the weekend Breakfast and Program. We welcome new members who wish to become active in the organization. Our special Associates’ member Francene Lifson, Vice President of Membership/Communications, would be happy to hear from you (flifson@aafasocal.com). Part of the benefit of membership in the Associates is our online membership directory. With a few clicks, you can access the information you need on the members of the Associates to the AAAAI. Take advantage of this technology. It will help us all stay connected!

If you have ideas to share, time to give, or merely questions to ask about the Associates, please contact me (fowashburne@bellsouth.net), any active Associate whom you know, or our Executive Director, John Augustyniak at the Associates executive office (jaugustyniak@aaaai.org). We are looking forward to seeing everyone in San Diego next February!

Thanks to Everyone!

Helen E. Ownby, Ph.D., Past President, Chair, Nominating Committee

Our meeting in Miami Beach was a success, thanks to the efforts of members of the Associates Board and all those of you who volunteered to help with the Not-So-Silent Auction, the Hospitality Suite, and our Sunday Breakfast and Business Meeting. There were about 150 ladies, gentlemen, and children who enjoyed the music of our Jazz Trio from Frost School of Music at the University of Miami and our clown, who painted butterflies, Spiderman, and multiple other designs on the children’s faces, besides making balloon sculptures. I wish to especially thank my committee chairs, Trudy Green, Hospitality, Virginia Fawcett, Scholarship, Francene Lifson, Fundraising, and Phyllis Rubin, Awards for going the extra miles this year. As we look ahead to San Diego, I’m looking for volunteers to serve on committees and the Associates Board in the coming years. Please contact John Augustyniak at the AAAAI executive offices (jaugustyniak@aaaai.org) or me (heownby@mindspring.com) to join us in making the Associates a bigger and better organization in the future.

Let me “E” You-The Email Revolution
As times changes, so does the way in which we communicate. We’ve gone from mail, to phone, to fax to email in what is really a small amount of time. The Associates in keeping with up to date communication vehicles is looking for our members email addresses.

The Associates to the AAAI would like to use email to get out time critical and “Hot Off The Press” information to our members in the most quick and efficient manner possible.

Please note it is the policy of the Associates not to sell either our mailing or email list to any parties for sales and or solicitation purposes.

Please complete the information form, and either fax (414.272.6070) the form or email us (jaugustyniak@aaaai.org) with your correct email, so that we may update our records.

The 2006 Not-so-Silent Auction, benefiting the Award of Excellence Asthma Scholarship Program was another rousing success. Bidding began on Friday morning of the AAAAI Annual Meeting and continued fast and furiously thru the Associates Sunday Morning Breakfast Event.
