Associates to the AAAAI:
2005 Winter Newsletter

Gaylene Altman

From the President - Gaylene Altman
Associates plan busy Annual Meeting schedule
The Associates (Spouses and Friends) to the AAAAI is pleased to announce a number of exciting things that will be happening in 2005.

Annual Meeting breakfast
We invite all spouses, friends and family members to participate in our annual breakfast event on Sunday, March 20, at the Hyatt Regency San Antonio Hotel. This is always a well-attended and great event for spouses and guests to gather, renew old friendships, create new ones and just have a good time. This year, our entertainment will have a traditional San Antonio flare. The Associates are pleased to welcome Manuel Vargas. Señor Vargas is a Latin, Grammy award-nominated Ranchera artist, known around the world for his classic songs and sounds of Mexican heritage. Come and enjoy the flavor of San Antonio.

“Not So Silent” Auction

The Associates annual “Not So Silent” Auction was created to help raise funds for the Award of Excellence Asthma Scholarship program, sponsored and supported by the Associates and sanofi aventis. This program was created in 2000 as a means of assisting graduating high school seniors who suffer with asthma, and helping them achieve their educational goals. Each year we receive more than 1,000 applicants for this scholarship, and this year received over 3,000 applications.

The auction will include a variety of unique items including a Hawaiian vacation, traditional crib quilts, original signed lithographs from up-and-coming artists, electronics, hotel getaways and many other items. The auction items will be on display at the AAAAI Resource Center, located in the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. Early bidding for the auction items will take place in the Associates Hospitality Suite, located in the San Antonio Marriott Rivercenter.

We encourage all Annual Meeting attendees to stop by, view and bid on these great items. It’s not too late to donate an auction item or simply make a monetary donation toward the scholarship fund. For more information, please contact John Augustyniak at the AAAAI executive offices at (414) 272-6071 or e-mail jaugustyniak@aaaai.org.

Get involved
The Associates are always looking for spouses and friends of the AAAAI to participate in our organization. There are committees and task forces that could use your assistance, including the 2006 “Not So Silent” Auction, Scholarship Committee and Newsletter Committee.

Finally, I would like to thank the 2004-2005 Associates Executive Committee and Board of Directors for all of their hard work for our organization. The Associates play an integral part in the success of the AAAAI, and assist in providing optimal patient care for those with asthma, allergic and immunological diseases.

A Record Number Apply for Award of Excellence Scholarship Program
One of the major programs for the Associates to the AAAAI is the Annual Award of Excellence Asthma Scholarship Programs. Since the inception of the program in 2000, the Award of Excellence Scholarship Program has helped assist well over 100 asthmatic high school seniors achieve their educational dreams and goals.

Since the inception of the program, nearly 1,000 students have applied for these scholarships each year. In 2005, the Associates is proud to announce that we received nearly 3,000 applications from across the country to be a possible recipient of either a $1,000 one-time scholarship or a $100 Merit Award.

The twenty plus $1,000 scholarships and thirty plus merit awards come courtesy in part from a grant from sanofi aventis. Also in 2005, the family of former Associates Executive Director, Robin McQuiston, will continue the funding of the Tanner McQuiston Memorial Scholarship, in memory of Ms McQuiston’s son. Funding for these scholarships also comes from the proceeds of the Not-So-Silent Auction held each year at the AAAAI Annual Meeting and from individuals who give donations towards the scholarship. If you, your family or organization would like to either contribute via a donation to the Not-so-Silent Auction or individual dollar donation, please contact either John Augustyniak, at the AAAAI executive offices at (414) 272-6071 or Vice President of Fundraising, Francene Lifson at (323) 937-7859.

The scholarship committee is currently reviewing the applications for the 2005 Awards and will be releasing the names of the recipients sometime in mid-April. Information for the 2006 Awards (for students graduating from high school in May/June 2006) will be available in August 2005 via the AAAAI Web site (http://www.aaaai.org/members/associates/).
