Associates to the AAAAI:  2003 Winter Newsletter

Margaret Quel

From the President - Margaret Quel
The Associates look forward to an exciting meeting in the Mile High City of Denver, the 60th Anniversary of the AAAAI. If your New Year’s resolution made references to enjoying life or expanding social involvement, the Associates can help with both. Stop by our hospitality suite in the Adams Mark Hotel for a sampling of the Associates’ history, a calendar of events and a selection of what Denver has to offer. Many of Denver’s wonderful sights are within walking distance from the Convention Center and the major hotels. Once known as the “Queen City of the Plains” Denver is a city full of surprises. Although it ranks 20th in population, Denver boasts the 10th largest downtown in America. The Associates look forward to welcoming you to the Mile High City.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN HI (Annual Breakfast)
Sunday, March 9th

Don’t miss out on a wonderful opportunity. This year’s annual breakfast will take place in a historical landmark rich in history, the Brown Palace Hotel. When entering the lobby of this hotel, you will step back 100 years into the first atrium hotel built in America. The Brown Palace also boasts of its spectacular stained glass roof and the many dignitaries that have visited and lived in its rooms. But this year’s annual breakfast has much more in store. When you enter our event you will encounter a Western atmosphere with bales of hay, checkered table cloths and lanterns. There will be photo opportunities galore as we will have the honor of presenting special guests. You will have the pleasure of meeting Red Bear, who will discuss Native American history in and around Denver and Buffalo Bill Cody, one of the west’s most famous characters. Both will be wearing traditional dress of the period and will be presenting memorabilia as well as brief stories of the Old West. Also adding to our Western theme will be songs from the world famous Denver Children’s Chorale. These lovely young voices have preformed for dignitaries worldwide and will make an exclusive appearance at our event.

Our Best Dressed in the West Contest will add to the fun with prizes for those wearing the most authentic and creative western outfit; let your imagination go “wild” (Wild West that is) and come dressed Western. So come on by, bring the kids, say “howdy”, and join in on our Rocky Mountain Hi celebration.

INTERNATIONAL TEA
Saturday, March 8th

This year we are expanding our International Tea invitation to include foreign spouses of allergists residing in the USA as well as our foreign visitors. Guests attending this event are invited to a special treat: a Private Tea and Tour in a historical Denver home located a short distance from the host hotel. The group will gather in the lobby of the Adams Mark Hotel at 2:45pm and will return to the Adams Mark at approximately 5pm. At the home we will be met by a historian who will give us a personal tour of the home. The tour will be followed by tea, conversation and an opportunity for cultural exchange; we ask those who plan on attending to bring a small item representing some aspect of your homeland’s culture.

Please direct questions regarding this event and RSVP’s to
Helen Ownby phone: 706/651-9229
email: heownby@mindspring.com or
Margaret Quel phone: 310/823-6766
email: marinaquel@hotmail.com. RSVP is recommended.

PEAAK
In our continuing effort to support the Academy’s as well as the Associates’ mission of educating the public, this award winning patient education program has traveled nationwide and helped guide many individuals suffering from allergy problems.

At our San Diego Peaak Program, the Spanish portion of that event was sponsored and supported by HAAMA, the Hispanic American Allergy Association and produced a record attendance. In Denver, we will once again benefit from the collaboration of this Hispanic organization. Thanks to the generosity of the Hispanic American Allergy and Immunology Association, our bi lingual (Spanish and English) patient education program will take place at the University of Colorado, Denver Campus, and within walking distance from the Denver Convention Center. This year’s Peaak program is especially exciting since it will be the first year the event is located in an educational facility rather than a luxury hotel. We are certain that this will make Denver’s educational program more accessible with paid parking and public transportation only steps away. The facility housing our event is focused on learning and will therefore provide a stimulating environment. If you would like more information on the eighth annual Peaak Program, or would like to offer help, please email:

 Member Donations Support Scholarship Program
AAAAI members have the opportunity to help an asthmatic student reach their educational goals through the Associates to the AAAAI (Spouse & Friends) Award of Excellence Asthma Scholarship Program. Academy members are encouraged to support this popular and valuable program by making a gift the program through their annual AAAAI membership dues statements.

For the fourth year in a row, the Associates will offer college scholarships for high school seniors suffering from asthma across the country. In 2002, the Associates’ Award of Excellence Asthma Scholarship program honored 17 outstanding U.S. high school students with scholarships to support their college tuition and fees. In 2003, the Associates again will provide $1,000 scholarships and $100 merit scholarships for the 2003-2004 school year.

Since its inception in 1999, the scholarship program has awarded $50,000 in scholarships to 60 high school students across the United States through $1,000 or $100 awards. The 2003 program will provide additional awards through the support of the Associates and AAAAI members.

Member support key
Word has continued to spread to students and asthma patients across the country about the Associates scholarships. Associates members received more than 1,000 applications for the 2002 award and expect even more in 2003.

“More and more students are learning about the program and need financial support to make their educational goals happen,” said Virginia Fawcett, Associates Scholarship Program Chair. “Academy members are in a unique position to make a difference in these students’ lives by making a simple donation as small as $25.”

Members can easily show their support for the program and asthmatic students’ educational aspirations by giving through their annual membership dues statements. On the 2003 dues form, a special line item has been added for members to give $25 or any amount they wish to support the program.

Application deadline extended
For the 2003 program, scholarship applications will only be available in electronic form via the Academy’s Web site, www.aaaai.org. Students and AAAAI members are encouraged to visit the Patients and Consumers Center and print an application. Members are encouraged to make copies of the form to have available in their office.

Completed application forms must be mailed to the AAAAI executive office by May 1, 2003. Winners will be selected in June. Winners will be notified prior to the start of the 2003-2004 school year and listed in Academy News and on www.aaaai.org.

Educational Research Trust
In 1993, the Associates began making its donations to ERT, a sum which now totals over $110,000. Thanks to the efficiently run 2002 budget, the Associates will once again be able to present ERT with a donation of $10,000.00 in keeping with our past commitment to this noble cause.

The Associates Pays Loving Tribute to Mary Frick
The Associates 20th Anniversary celebration was highlighted with a fitting tribute Mary Frick who has served the organization since its inception.

Actually, Mary had thoughts of a spouse’s lay group as far back as 1976, recruiting friends as advocates for allergy and sending letters to congress on the allergist behalf and addressing the medical issues of the day. An ad hoc committee was formed to study the feasibility of establishing such an organization. With the hard work of Mary and many others the spouse of the Academy members formalized their new organization at the 1981 Annual meeting held in San Francisco. The late Evelyn Schoenkerman was elected the first President of the Associates to the American Academy of Allergy.

Mary Frick became the Associates second President at the annual meeting in Hollywood, Florida in 1983. By then, the newly formed organization was well on its way. The Associates blossomed under inspired leadership. “It was a dream come true,” said the new president. Mary remembers with fondness a high tea planned by the late Evelyn Levine to celebrate the founding the Associates and to stimulate enthusiasm for new members. The tea was a huge success. The Academy agreed to support our efforts financially, but soon the executive committee decided that the Associates had to be a self-supporting organization and have been ever since.

At the Associates annual luncheon and business meeting, March 3, 2002, in New York City the Associates to the American Academy of Allergy Asthma and Immunology honored Mark Frick with a special award. Thanking her for her foresight as a charter member, leadership, tenacity and steadfast loyalty to the Associates over the past twenty plus years. This is the third such award. Previous awards have been presented to Miriam Bernstein and Judith Spector.

Mary also volunteers as her local museum and the San Francisco Orchestra while assisting her husband, Oscar, with his work and is ever present at his side at the Academy meetings.

A Special Thank You
As I reminisce about last year’s meeting in New York, I remember the balmy weather, the Broadway shows, and the beautiful spirit of the people of that toddling town. Thanks to all who came and participated in a very successful meeting. Thanks especially to the Associates Board for their help in assembling a variety of events for spouses. A highlight was our Sunday morning brunch at the Waldorf Astoria where a cast from the Lion King delighted us with some of their favorite tunes. The PEAAK program on Saturday was a great success as we reached out to the New York community. Our writers’ workshop and international tea were other opportunities for people to renew old friendships and make new ones. We also awarded college scholarships to deserving asthmatic high school seniors and held a silent auction with ERT to raise money for this fund.
March is upon us again, and this year it’s time to head west to Denver for another great meeting. Margaret Quel, our new president, has been working diligently to plan an excellent program for spouses. Hope to see you in the mile high city.
