Associates enhancing projects
By Helen E. Ownby PhD, 2005-2006 Associates President

It is my pleasure to serve as President of the Associates for the next year. The Associates had a great year in 2004-2005, and 2005-2006 looks to be an even better year. We are already at work on a number of different projects and enhancements to current offerings, including some exciting new changes to our Award of Excellence Asthma Scholarship program and an exciting and innovative program for the 2006 Annual Meeting in Miami Beach, FL. Information on these enhancements will be available early summer 2005.

Update on 2005 Associates annual program
The AAAAI enjoyed a delightful meeting in San Antonio. For those from the north, it was a welcome breath of spring.

The annual breakfast and program was held on Sunday morning of the Annual Meeting. Guests were greeted with a full breakfast buffet and an opportunity to make the final bids for our “Not so Silent” Auction. The Auction, coordinated again in 2005 by Francene Lifson, was a great success. This year, we were able to raise $7,000, more than double the amount raised in 2004, which will be used in funding some of the Award of Excellence Asthma Scholarships. A special thanks goes out to all AAAAI members who participated through their donations and bids for our outstanding items. We look forward to an even bigger and better auction next year.

In regards to the program, a large thank you to Elaine Richheimer, vice president-programs, for arranging for Latin Grammy award-nominated Ranchera artist, Manuel Vargas and his orchestra to entertain us with sounds of Mexico. All of those in attendance definitely had a fantastic time.

Our Award of Excellence Asthma Scholarship program has taken on a life of its own. Over 2,900 completed applications were submitted this year. Due to the generosity of sanofi-aventis, the AAAAI, donations from individuals and practice groups, and the proceeds from our auction, we were able to award 39 scholarships of $1,000 and an additional 42 merit scholarships of $100 to high school seniors with asthma. Look for information regarding the 2006 scholarship program in August 2005.

Finally, we are always looking for new faces to join us on our many projects and initiatives. If your spouse or friends are interested in getting involved with the Associates, please contact me, in care of the AAAAI executive office, 555 E. Wells Street, Suite 1100, Milwaukee, WI 53202.
